The Last Temptation Of Christ

Having been a reason for christian fundamentalists to destroy innocent movie theatres around the world this is actually just a decent Martin Scorsese movie. See the disoriented magician Jesus (William Defoe) walking through the Holy Land in his early thirties, talking to himself and doing impressive magic wherever there?s a crowd to be impressed. For obscure reasons the poor fellow is nailed to the cross and travels into alternative realities in the blinding desert sun. Cool movie!

  • I saw this back when I was still just dabbling in magic, and still going to Catholic church.  Bizarrely enough I saw it with a bunch of liberal catholics who thought it was wrong to protest about something without seeing for ourselves what the fuss was supposed to be about.  None of that group found the film offensive in any way.Personnally I quite liked it at the time, helped break some boundaries in my thinking, although I don't remember much about it now, so it may be time for a re-watch.

  • Isn't this about to be banned or something? I was skimming in the link to the new censorship laws and I'm sure it said that it was to be banned...

Its time to do something about the creeping fascism of this little island. In the words of 'V', "There is something very wrong with this country".

  • Which reminds meoes anyone think the subtleties of V for Vendetta hold a deep message for us once again. I fear for the film tho..folks have a bad habit of butchering Moore's work

  • Governments should fear their citizens?

  • Citizens shouldn't have to fear their government?

I'm not sure if they want to. I don't think there'll be censorship problems with this movie in Germany any more. Censoring it would be even more absurd than calling Lady Chatterley's Lover pornographic. The Last Temptation Of Christ isn't really that antichristian. I think the only problem some fundies could have with this film is that it contradicts some official dogmas. I don't see anything offensive to Christians in the film. I think back in the late 80s when it was released they were ranting about Jesus's relationship with prostitute Maria Magdalena, which isn't the most important element of the plot anyway and I'm not even sure if you can say it is that much of a romantic relationship. If they found the metaphysical worldview underlying the visions Jesus has got when he dies blasphemous is another question. That is closer to New Age beliefs than to Christianity. Nevertheless Jesus is the protagonist and not depicted as a weakling or as being erroneous. The fact that the movie bluntly says that Paul was wrong and made some mistakes could be offensive to the Church but it has been written before by others. I think it's kind of wierd that pagans might be a little more enthusiastic about the events in the first days of Christianity the way they are depicted here than Christians. Things like Johns cult in Damascus and the spiritual practices shown in the movie of which some include the use of psychoactive substances are rather romantic for pagans than for Christians.Buit especially those scenes are what I like about the movie.Sad that it's so hard to get. It's unusual for a Martin Scorsese movie with famous actors like Harvey Keitel and Willem Dafoe to be shown so seldomnly on TV. I've found a DVD of it in a super market for just a few bucks. Maybe Wal-Mart or some similar store might still sell it. I hope you stumble across The last temptation of Christ one day.GreetingsZeitl0ch
